Japan – a land where lost wallets get returned with money intact

Prior to coming to Japan, I often heard that Japan was a safe country and that if one was to lose something, the likelihood of being reunited with the item was high. A friend of mine once left his laptop on a train, and after a few phone calls and a couple of days, he got his laptop back.

My experience was similar enough to make me really appreciate living here. One night after a concert, I was heading home and had to catch in an apartment about a 15-minute walk from the last train’s final stop. Wanting to get home soon, I ran the whole way.

The next day I woke and soon realized that I was no longer in possession of my wallet, nor the 60,000 yen with which I was going to pay my city taxes and other bills.

I panicked and retraced my steps from the run the night before. I searched for about two or three hours ; stopping at every convenience store and two police boxes before giving up.

After I returned home with the feeling of disappointment heavy on my shoulders, I went to check my mailbox and to my surprise… there was my wallet.

I slowly opened it with a feeling of trepidation, fearing that it would be empty of yen, only to find that my money, unbelievably, was still there. My firsthand experience bears witness that Japan is truly a safe country.
